My name is Kristine Berg and I am an Adult Services Librarian working for Kitsap Regional Library in Port Orchard, Washington.
I am responsible for adult programming at my branch and for helping coordinate the programming across the system. I am also the Head of the Craft Committee and design and implement all of the craft programs offered each quarter.
I staff our single service desk and provide reference and circulation services, technical assistance, and readers' advisory to adults, teens, and children. I pride myself on being approachable, knowledgeable, efficient, and welcoming.
I am the supervisor for our volunteer team and responsible for recruiting, hiring, on-boarding, continuously training, providing feedback, and gratitude. Because our volunteers work hand-in-hand with our pages and library assistants, I also coordinate with our public services supervisor to ensure that our branch has the appropriate coverage to maintain optimum efficiency.
Outside of the Library's walls, I participate in outreach activities by partnering with community members and organizations. I take regular programs to new venues -- like our monthly Books on Tap trivia night -- engage with local retirement communities by helping host a high tea, and establish enduring relationships by joining local organizations and fostering one-on-one relationships with local business people.

From There to Here
It seems as though my family and friends have always known that I would be a librarian. My family loves to tell the story about my 10th birthday party. Rather than hosting a bowling party, taking friends to a movie, or going roller skating (those were the popular parties), I organized a reading party and gave each guest a book that I had selected just for them. Perhaps not the coolest thing a fourth grader in a new school could do -- most of my new friends were pretty confused by the unusual party -- it was very true to who I was and who I am now. Helping people find something -- whether a new book to read or information to answer a question or a solution to a business problem -- is where I excel. I am passionate about connecting people with the data that they need and introducing them to new sources that they didn't even know they were missing.
When I entered the University of Washington's Information School in 2011, I planned to focus on database management and corporate information needs. I am focused on providing customers with outstanding experiences and motivated to deliver the most relevant and accurate information. I've taken courses in web analytics, SQL, and databases, but after taking two classes with Nancy Pearl, I found myself falling in love again with reader's advisory and public librarianship. I use the skills that I have gained in the corporate world and through the courses at the iSchool in my work as a public librarian to drive innovation and provide consistently superior service.

Constantly Learning, Constantly Improving
I am always striving to learn new things, expand my knowledge, and improve my current skills. I love to learn and I am infinitely curious.
I am a board member of the Kitsap Young Professionals. Our mission is Learn, Live, Give. We organize monthly meet-ups, opportunities to learn professional development and life skills (such as our annual CPR certification class, how to get started buying your first home, and networking basics) and also provide an outlet for young professionals new to the area to get out and enjoy themselves. We also provide opportunities for people to give back to their community by hosting events, like the annual Inlet Clean Up. As a board member, I help plan and organize events and maintain our social media presence on Facebook.
I am a member of The Knitting Guild Association and take correspondence courses to improve my skill. I am currently working towards completing the first level of TKGA's Master Handknitting program. The Master Handknitting program is an opportunity to test my skill, have my work professionally evaluated, and learn more about this craft and its history.
I am also currently enrolled in Lake Washington Institute of Technology's Saturday Sewing Lab where I am learning the nuances of good fit and garment construction.
Hobbies
Not all of my time is spent working. When I need to relax or have some time off, I love to work on my knitting or crafting projects, read or listen to audiobooks, go to the gym, and try new restaurants around Seattle. I've recently started taking sewing classes and have begun supplementing my wardrobe with my own handiwork.
A great deal of my free time is spent knitting and sewing. I also like to design my own patterns. To see one of my patterns, check out my website, Kristine's Delftwear, that I created as part of a reflection project for a research methods class in Amsterdam during the summer of 2012.
While studying art history and visual culture at Whitman College, I established and ran the Knit Whit Club which not only met weekly to craft together, but we also taught others how to knit and maintained a small pattern and supply library that enabled members to try new things with no financial investment. To receive sanction and funding from the college, I organized an official charter, petitioned the student council, and maintained good standing with the Associated Students of Whitman College board.
